How to Calculate Win Percentage (with Ties)

While our free Winning Percentage Calculator is a handy tool, you may also want to know how to perform a winning percentage calculation without a calculator.

To calculate win percentage with ties (or without), simply use the following formula:

Remember that, when performing a winning percentage calculation, ties are equal to half of a win, so they are represented by 0.5 (one half) in the formula.

For example, consider the 2022 New York Giants in the NFL, who finished withe following record:

  • 9 Wins

  • 7 Losses

  • 1 Tie

To calculate the 2022 Giants’ winning percentage, you can input wins (9), losses (7), ties (1) and total games (17) into the formula s follows:

The final result is a winning percentage of .559. If you want to express the result as a percentage instead of a decimal, simply multiply the decimal result by 100:

  • .559 x 100 = 55.9% Winning Percentage

What does Winning Percentage mean in sports?

Simply put, winning percentage represents the percentage of games or matches played resulting in a win (rather than a loss or a tie).

For example, the 1997-199 Chicago Bulls played 82 total games with the following results:

  • 62 Wins

  • 20 Losses

  • 0 Draws/Ties

That season, the Bulls had a winning percentage of 75.6%. This statistic is sometimes also shown in decimal form as .756.

You can confirm this winning percentage by inputting the results into the Win Percentage Calculator above.

With a 75.6% (.756) winning percentage, the Bulls won approximately three-quarters of the games that they played. Furthermore, if that team were to play 100 games, you could expect them to win around 76 of them.

Note that both the percentage form and the decimal form of winning percentage mean the same thing, just expressed in different ways.

What is a .500 Winning Percentage?

In sports, a winning percentage over 50% means that a team or individual has won more games or matches than they lost. On the other hand, a winning percentage below 50% means that a team or individual has lost more games or matches than they won.

But, what happens when a team or individual wins the same number of games or matches as they lose? In this case, the winning percentage would be 50% or .500.

For example, the 2019 Pittsburgh Steelers played 16 total games with the following results:

  • 8 Wins

  • 8 Losses

  • 0 Draws/Ties

That season, the Steelers had a win percentage of 50% or .500.

Again, you can confirm the winning percentage of the 2019 Pittsburg Steelers by inputting the results into the Win Percentage Calculator above.
