Math Jeopardy 3rd Grade Review: How to Play

Welcome to 3rd Grade Math Jeopardy! This fun and engaging math game is a great way to practice your math skills, test your understanding of topics, and have some fun alongside your friends and/or classmates. If you are new to playing Jeopardy-style review games, below you will find some useful information including how to play and tips on how to score the most points.

What is 3rd Grade Math Jeopardy?

Third Grade Math Jeopardy is a review game based on the popular television game show where contestants compete against each other by answering trivia questions from a variety of topics and categories including science, sports, pop culture, movies, history, geography, and more. Of course, in this Math Jeopardy 3rd Grade version, all of the categories will be based on math topics covered in the 3rd grade. In both versions of the game, contestants earn points for correctly answering questions and, at the end of the game, the contestant with the most points is the winner. Questions are assigned points values that range from 100 to 500 points. The more points a question is worth, the more difficult the question is (i.e. a 100 point question would be considered easy, a 300 point question would be considered moderately difficult, and a 500 point question would be considered very hard).

The Math Jeopardy 3rd Grade version’s categories are all based on math topics that are typically covered in third grade.

How to Play 3rd Grade Math Jeopardy:

  1. Use the game board above to start playing the Math Jeopardy 3rd Grade Review. All of the categories and points values are already included on the board.

  2. You can play 3rd grade jeopardy by splitting into groups/teams or by having individual students play against each other. We recommend teams for large groups and individual players for smaller groups. For example, a group of 24 students could play as six teams with four students on each team, while a group of just five students would allow students to play against each other.

  3. There is a time limit to answering each question. In the television game show version of Jeopardy, contestants have only five seconds to give an answer before a buzzer sounds and they run out of time. For 3rd Grade Math Jeopardy, we recommend a 20-second timer. You can use the time above which will countdown 20-seconds and then make a buzzer sound. If the buzzer sounds before a student has given an answer, the zero points are awarded. You also have the option of giving students more time to answer (the 20-second timer is only a suggestion).

  4. When it is your turn, choose both your math category and the point value to receive your question. If you get the question correct, you or your team will earn that point amount. If you answer incorrectly, then you lose the point value for the question and the next player or team gets an opportunity to answer the question and steal the points.

  5. Look out for the hidden Daily Double question! In each game of 3rd Grade Math Jeopardy, one question will include the Daily Double graphic, which means that this question is worth double points. For example, if a 400-point question includes the Daily Double graphic, then answering it correctly will earn a player or team 800 total points if answered correctly. Note that the Daily Double question is a mystery and you will not know that a question is a Daily Double until after you have selected it and the question is revealed.

  6. Be sure to keep score. The game host or a student helper should keep track of the score for every player or team as the game goes along.

  7. The game is over when all of the questions have been answered and there are no more boxes left to choose from. The player of team with the most points at the end of the game will be the winner.

  8. Final Jeopardy (Optional). This aspect of the game is completely optional. For Final Jeopardy, students have the opportunity to risk some of or all of their points in an attempt to answer one final question. Students will be given the category of the question before they choose to wager their points. Then they will be presented with the question (see the video above). If they answer it correctly, they earn the amount of points that were wagered. If they get it wrong, they lose that amount of points.
